Thu Mar 2114:20Eloy Jimenez Suffers Bruised FootEloy JiménezRFWhite SoxFree Agent
Chicago White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez (foot) has suffered a bruised right foot after fouling a pitch off of it on Wednesday. The oft-injured 27-year-old is listed as day to day at this point. It's been a productive spring to this point for Jimenez in Cactus League action as he is hitting .356 with one homer, 12 RBI, and an .894 OPS across 47 trips to the plate. He took a step back at the plate in the 2023 season when he hit .272 with 18 home runs, 64 RBI, and a .758 OPS across 120 appearances, good for a 105 wRC+ that represents the second-lowest mark of his five-year career. He is a solid bounce-back candidate who projects for 23 home runs and 73 RBI by ATC across 125 games in the 2024 campaign but he still carries substantial injury risk.

Thu Mar 2112:28Shohei Ohtani Not Facing DisciplineShohei OhtaniDH/SPAngelsFree Agent
Los Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani is not currently facing discipline, nor is he believed to be under active investigation by the league, according to an MLB official. Ohtani's long-time interpreter Ippei Mizuhara was fired by the Dodgers on Wednesday following accusations of "massive theft." Ohtani went 1-for-5 with a sacrifice fly in the 15-11 loss to the San Diego Padres on Thursday and didn't answer questions postgame and was escorted out of the clubhouse by a team public relations official. There was no consideration of having Ohtani sit out Thursday's game, according to manager Dave Roberts. Mizuhara is being accused of using Ohtani's money to place bets with an illegal bookmaker who is under federal investigation. As of right now, the 29-year-old Ohtani isn't facing any discipline, but this is a developing situation.

Wed Mar 2021:53Giancarlo Stanton Erupts For Three Homers, Eight RBIGiancarlo StantonRFYankeesFree Agent
New York Yankees designated hitter/outfielder Giancarlo Stanton went off in Wednesday's 12-0 Grapefruit League rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates, smashing three home runs and piling up eight RBI. Stanton went deep for a towering two-run homer in the first inning, crushed a grand slam during the second frame, and launched a solo blast in the fourth just for good measure. And just like that, the 34-year-old slugger is now batting .314 (11-for-35) with four long balls, 10 RBI, and a 1.073 OPS this spring. Stanton's All-Star days might be behind him after a miserable 2023 saw him register a career-worst .191/.275/.420 triple-slash line across 415 plate appearances, but he'll open the 2024 season as the everyday designated hitter in the heart of the order in a loaded Yankees lineup. His playing time should be safe until Jasson Dominguez (elbow) returns later in the summer, and Stanton's 220 NFBC ADP should rise a bit following Wednesday's explosion.

Wed Mar 2020:29Shohei Ohtani's Interpreter Fired Over Allegation Of "Massive Theft"Shohei OhtaniDH/SPAngelsFree Agent
The Los Angeles Dodgers' interpreter for two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani was fired on Wednesday after questions surrounding at least $4.5 million in wire transfers sent from Ohtani's bank account to a bookmaking operation set off a series of events. Ippei Mizuhara incurred gambling debts to a bookmaking operation that is under federal investigation, according to multiple sources. Mizuhara was accused by Ohtani's attorneys of engaging in a "massive theft" of Ohtani's funds. Multiple sources told ESPN that Ohtani does not gamble, and the funds covered Mizuhara's losses. The federal investigation is ongoing, but it appears that Ohtani is innocent in all of this and never bet on sports, so this incident shouldn't leave him open to any kind of discipline from Major League Baseball.

Wed Mar 2019:16Gio Urshela Hasn't Locked Down Starting Duties At Third BaseGio Urshela3BIndiansFree Agent
When the Detroit Tigers signed infielder Gio Urshela to a one-year, $1.5 million deal late in February, having him serve as the primary third baseman in 2024 always made the most sense but the Tigers didn't make any declarations about his playing time because they needed to evaluate his on-field performance in his return from a broken pelvis last year. With eight days until Opening Day on March 28 against the Chicago White Sox, Urshela hasn't locked down starting duties at the hot corner as he competes with Matt Vierling, Zach McKinstry and Andy Ibanez. Vierling was projected to be the primary third baseman before the team signed Urshela, only to move back to his previous role as an outfielder. Urshela is the best defender, but he hasn't been hitting for power or drawing walks on offense. Urshela and Vierling -- both right-handed hitters -- are at the top of the pecking order in the internal plan for a primary third baseman.

Wed Mar 2009:22Shohei Ohtani Has Two Hits In Dodger DebutShohei OhtaniDH/SPAngelsFree Agent
Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles , a stolen base and RBI in Wednesday's Opening Day contest against the San Diego Padres in Seoul, South Korea. Ohtani signed the biggest contract in sports history this offseason and came out of the gate strong in his first game. Ohtani's RBI would come in the top of the eighth inning when he added insurance to the Dodgers lead in a four-run inning for the club. Ohtani is coming off of another dominant year at the plate and now joins a team surrounded with superstars that should lead to even more run producing numbers. The left-handed slugger offers value across the board and can safely be selected as a first-rounder.

Tue Mar 1913:37Nathan Eovaldi Gets Opening Day Nod For RangersNathan EovaldiSPRaysFree Agent
The Texas Rangers announced on Tuesday that right-hander Nathan Eovaldi will start the team's Opening Day game on March 28 at home versus the visiting Chicago Cubs. The injury-prone Eovaldi will kick off the year as the Rangers look to defend their World Series title from last fall. The 34-year-old veteran has made the All-Star team twice in the last three years and went 12-5 with a 3.63 ERA (3.88 FIP) and 1.14 WHIP while walking 47 and striking out 132 hitters in 144 innings over his 25 starts in 2023 during the regular season. During the team's run to the World Series in the playoffs, he went 5-0 with a 2.95 ERA and 41 K's in 36 2/3 frames. Eovaldi can be a solid fantasy asset when healthy, but he's gone over 150 innings just once since the 2016 campaign.

Mon Mar 1820:24Nick Martinez To Open The Year In The RotationNick MartinezSPRangersFree Agent
Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell said that right-hander Nick Martinez (ribs) is locked into a starting rotation spot to begin the year, along with Frankie Montas, Hunter Greene and Graham Ashcraft. The fifth spot is down to Andrew Abbott and Brandon Williamson (shoulder). Martinez has been dealing with a rib issue in camp, but he was able to throw a simulated game over the weekend and should be ready for Opening Day on March 28. The 33-year-old has started 87 of the 198 games that he's appeared in in the big leagues in six seasons, and he's been more effective in his career in a relief role. Moving back to the bullpen is still an option once lefty Nick Lodolo (leg) makes his 2024 debut, which makes Martinez more of an NL-only asset in his first year with the Reds.

Mon Mar 1813:35Shohei Ohtani Cleared To Begin Throwing ProgramShohei OhtaniDH/SPAngelsFree Agent
Los Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (elbow) has been cleared to start a throwing program later this week, six months after having his second elbow surgery. Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who performed Ohtani's surgery last Sept. 19, said that if Ohtani "goes along with the throwing program as we have it scheduled," he could begin throwing to hitters in late September. However, manager Dave Roberts reiterated that the team doesn't expect Ohtani to pitch until 2025. The skipper did acknowledge the possibility that the Dodgers could consider playing Ohtani in the field later this year if his arm has recovered enough. The 29-year-old Japanese superstar played a total of 8 1/3 innings in the outfield in his six seasons with the Angels (all in 2021), so it's unlikely we'll see him in the outfield much, if at all, later in 2024.

Mon Mar 1813:18Chris Martin May Not Be Ready For Opening DayChris MartinRPRangersFree Agent
The Boston Globe's Peter Abraham writes that right-hander Chris Martin (groin) may not be ready for Opening Day on March 28. Closer Kenley Jansen (back) was scratched from making his second Grapefruit League appearance on Monday, but the team still believes he has a shot to be ready by Opening Day. The 37-year-old Martin threw a live batting practice session in camp on Saturday, but he's running out of time to get ready for the start of the regular season. He's expected to need four spring training appearances in order to be ready for Opening Day. This is notable because Martin figures to be the BoSox's next man up for save chances if Jansen misses any time due to injury in 2024. Given Jansen's recent string of injuries and his age (36), it's likely he's going to miss time at some point. Josh Winckowski is another name that could see save chances early in the year if both Jansen and Martin aren't 100%.

Sun Mar 1714:54Nick Martinez Throws Simulated GameNick MartinezSPRangersFree Agent
Cincinnati Reds pitcher Nick Martinez (ribs) threw a live batting practice session on Saturday. The right-hander threw three innings of a simulated game as he works his way back to full health. The plan is for Martinez to build his way back up into being a starting pitcher. The 33-year-old could end up turning into a swingman type of role depending on how the rest of the rotation shakes out in Cincinnati. At the moment, Martinez isn't a very appealing option heading into fantasy drafts. However, it sounds like the right-hander is making good progress in his recovery.

Sun Mar 1708:51Giancarlo Stanton Crushes First Home Run Of SpringGiancarlo StantonRFYankeesFree Agent
New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton clobbered his first home run of the spring on Saturday in a 10-9 Grapefruit League win over the Blue Jays. The 34-year-old demolished a 1-0 fastball from Jays pitcher Paolo Espino and finished the day 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored. It took Stanton 25 at-bats to hit his first homer and he's batting just .250 (7-for-28) in ten spring games, but at least he's healthy after missing 61 games last season. As long as he's in the lineup he should be a viable source of power and is available at the end of most drafts. Currently projected to hit 26 home runs over 104 games this season, if the former MVP can eclipse that number he could be a value.

Sat Mar 1612:18Keynan Middleton To Start The Year On Injured ListKeynan MiddletonRP/SPAngelsFree Agent
St. Louis Cardinals right-handed reliever Keynan Middleton (forearm) has a forearm strain and will be shut down from throwing for at least 10 days. It means that he'll start the 2024 regular season on the injured list. The Cardinals are planning to be without him for at least a couple of weeks into the season in April. The 30-year-old signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the team last month after he pitched for both the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees in 2023, posting a decent 3.38 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP, two saves and 64 strikeouts in 50 2/3 relief innings. When healthy, Middleton can be valuable in deep holds leagues as a late-inning setup man for the Cardinals alongside Andrew Kittredge and Giovanny Gallegos in front of closer Ryan Helsley.

Sat Mar 1609:46Hunter Harvey Continues His Strong SpringHunter HarveyRPOriolesFree Agent
Washington Nationals reliever Hunter Harvey pitched one inning of relief on Friday in a 7-3 Grapefruit League win over the Mets. Harvey has had a nice spring, allowing six hits and two earned runs with a 10:1 K:BB over six and one-third innings pitched (2.84 ERA). The 29-year-old is coming off the best season of his career and looks primed to have a repeat performance in 2024. Staying healthy has always been an issue for him, but even missing time last season he was still able to collect 10 saves and 19 holds. If the Nats' primary closer Kyle Finnegan falters, Harvey would be in a prime spot to take over the duties full-time.

Fri Mar 1522:31Pirates Agree With Domingo German On Minor-League DealDomingo GermánRP/SPYankeesFree Agent
The Pittsburgh Pirates agreed with free-agent right-hander Domingo German on a $1.5 million minor-league deal on Friday. The 31-year-old Dominican hurler tossed a no-hitter against the lowly Oakland Athletics last year while with the New York Yankees, but that was easily the highlight of his season, as he finished with a 5-7 record, 4.56 ERA (4.65 FIP) and 1.08 WHIP with 34 walks and 114 strikeouts in 108 2/3 innings pitched over his 20 appearances (19 starts) in his sixth year in pinstripes. He'll have a better opportunity with the rebuilding Pirates, but German is unlikely to be much of a fantasy asset outside of NL-only leagues if he's with the big-league roster in 2024. In his six-year career, German holds a 4.41 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 2.8 walks per nine innings and 9.4 K's per nine innings in 522 1/3 frames.

Fri Mar 1520:50J.D. Davis Signs With A'sJ.D. Davis3BAstrosFree Agent
Free-agent third baseman J.D. Davis signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Oakland Athletics on Friday. The deal includes another $1 million in performance-based incentives. Davis will stay in the Bay Area after spending all of 2023 with the San Francisco Giants, where he slashed .248/.325/.413 with 18 home runs, 69 RBI and 61 runs scored in 144 games and 546 plate appearances. He was expendable in San Fran when the Giants signed Matt Chapman. Given the state of the perpetually rebuilding A's roster, the 30-year-old right-handed slugger should immediately slot in as Oakland's starting third baseman in 2024, boosting his fantasy appeal as a corner-infield option in deep-mixed leagues. Davis has a career .261/.343/.432 slash line with a .775 OPS and 68 homers in seven major-league seasons.

Fri Mar 1519:09Nestor Cortes Gets Opening Day StartNestor CortesSPOriolesFree Agent
New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes has been tabbed as the club's Opening Day starter against the Houston Astros on the road on March 28. It was recently reported that Marcus Stroman did not wish to alter his spring schedule to line up for Opening Day, and manager Aaron Boone said Carlos Rodon was not a candidate. With Gerrit Cole (shoulder) on the shelf, it's Cortes who dealt with his fair share of injuries last season, limiting him to just 12 starts. He worked to a 4.97 ERA and a 17.7% K-BB% in that time, just one season after breaking out with a 2.44 ERA across 28 starts in the 2022 campaign. ATC is projecting a bounce-back in 2024 for the 29-year-old, who projects for a 3.97 ERA and a quality 17.8% K-BB% across 26 outings (23 starts) this season.

Fri Mar 1513:06Danny Jansen Has Fracture In His WristDanny JansenCBlue JaysFree Agent
Toronto Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen (wrist) has been diagnosed with a fractured pisiform bone in his right wrist. The Blue Jays expect him to miss "a couple weeks," and he has a follow-up appointment with a doctor on Friday. The 28-year-old backstop's history of hand issues continues. It's a tough blow for Toronto just before the start of the season for one of their most important hitters, but manager John Schneider is hoping Jansen will return quickly. Jansen was hit by a pitch in a Grapefruit League game on Wednesday and will now miss at least the next couple of weeks while he heals. He'll likely open the year on the injured list, but he could make his season debut at some point in April. With Jansen sidelined, Alejandro Kirk will be the team's primary catcher, with Brian Serven and Payton Henry battling for backup duties.

Wed Mar 1321:42Gleyber Torres Stays Hot With Solo BlastGleyber TorresSSYankeesFree Agent
New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres continued his hot hitting during Wednesday's 9-4 Cactus League defeat to the division-rival Boston Red Sox, clobbering a solo home run in the fifth inning. With the effort, Torres is now hitting a strong .308 alongside a .960 OPS, two long balls, five RBI, and one stolen base in 26 at-bats this spring. It's unclear what spot the 27-year-old two-time All-Star's bat will settle in as part of New York's star-studded lineup in 2024, but whether he regularly leads off or hits from the heart of the order, Torres is in line for another very productive campaign as the everyday Yankees second baseman. After slashing a dependable .273/.347/.453 with 25 round-trippers, 68 RBI, and 13 stolen bases in 672 plate appearances last year, Torres is a fine fantasy choice at the keystone inside the top 100 picks once the top-tier options are off the board.

San Diego Padres outfielder Jurickson Profar (leg) was forced to exit early during Wednesday's Cactus League matchup against the Oakland Athletics. The veteran slugger came up limping after rounding first base in the fourth inning. He was able to walk off the field under his own power. The expectation is that Profar will undergo further testing and an update will be given following the contest. The 31-year-old was 3-for-3 with a one home run and 4 RBI before exiting the game. The expectation is that Profar is going to be the Opening Day left fielder in San Diego.
